Case Study · Universal Life

How a California retiree more than doubled a direct offer through competitive bidding.

A California retiree’s $500,000 UL policy went from a $40,000 direct offer to $98,500 after Settle ran a five-buyer competitive auction.

The first direct offer I got was forty thousand dollars. Settle came back with nearly two and a half times more after putting it out to bid.

    James T.

    The situation

James, 74, lives in San Diego and had carried a $500,000 universal life policy since the late 1990s. After a cardiac event in 2024, his life expectancy profile shifted in a way that — counterintuitively — made the policy meaningfully more valuable on the secondary market. He learned this only after receiving a direct mail offer from a buyer for $40,000 and asking a friend who happened to be a financial planner.

Why the direct offer fell short

Direct buyers face no competitive pressure. They make a single offer, often well below institutional fair value, knowing many policyholders will accept the first number they see. The $40,000 offer James received was 82% lower than what the market would ultimately pay.

    Running the auction

Settle prepared the medical and policy file and presented it to five institutional buyers. Opening bids ranged from $58,000 to $84,000. Two buyers entered an aggressive counter-offer cycle, and the final winning bid landed at $98,500 — nearly 2.5x the direct offer and 4.5x the cash surrender value.

    The outcome

From application to wire: 58 days. James used the proceeds to cover out-of-pocket medical costs not reimbursed by Medicare and to establish an emergency reserve. He kept a smaller term policy in place for his remaining coverage needs. The lesson, in his words: never accept the first offer on a policy you have paid into for 25 years.
